Sea Shocks
Sea Shocks boat mats
Issue presented to the SKYDEX team
SKYDEX realized there was space in the marine market for a consumer version of the military boat decking technology already developed. This product was needed to lessen the impact felt by recreational boaters or tournament fisherman on rough seas.
Specific goal for the final product
SKYDEX engineers sought to develop a product with shock attenuation abilities similar to military and commercial boat decking products in a single mat form rather than tiles, at a consumer-friendly price.
Research and design process
The development of Sea Shocks started by using the proven shock absorbing layer used in military and commercial boat decking systems already designed by SKYDEX. SKYDEX engineers then designed a six sided cast urethane cover for the boat mat. The new product could not slide around, had a non-skid surface and had an appearance that complimented the area where the captain stands at the helm.
Final outcome of the R & D process
Sea Shocks boat decking was introduced in Spring 2004 with the launch of www.SeaShocks.com. Sales rapidly exceeded expectations and the product won the Most Innovative Product Award at The Marine Aftermarket Accessories Trade Show. Sea Shocks 2.0, a companion product, was introduced in 2004. The new version was designed for boaters who did not need advanced protection from rough waters. Currently several thousand Sea Shocks mats were in use around the world. Sea Shocks can only be purchased from SKYDEX.
